All_ScrappersJOYCE WEST SIMMONSPosted by JanHolleyLong57 at 15:22, on Tuesday, January 31, 2012
Joyce West Simmons of the Class of 1957, underwent surgery on Monday, January 16, 2012. Joyce had to have the big toe on her right foot removed due to melanoma. It was also necessary for the surgeon to remove a number of lymph nodes in this area. She returned to the doctor in a week after surgery to have the stitches removed, however, her foot was still very swollen and there was some infection. She is hoping to have the stitches out this week sometime. Joyce is at home and in some pain. She will be meeting with a cancer doctor next week to see if any type of chemo will be required. Please remember Joyce in your prayers and pray that God's will be done in her life.
Many thanks,
Jan Holley Long Class of 1957

George is in room 325. George was in charge of the "Bubba" Blackwell golf tournament last time it was played. Today, Monday, January 16th 2012, I went to St. Francis Nursing Home to visit with Billy Wood, of Memphis. Billy was in the 1951 graduating class of South Side. He has been in the St. Francis Hospital and St. Francis Nursing Home for the past 30 days. He went in the hospital and recently was moved into the nursing home. Billy has been very confused and down and has not been able to walk or even stand by himself. When you have talked to him, he could not say what he wanted to say and talked so low that you could not hear him. Today, he was much better. I could hear him talking and he could say what he wanted to say and he was much easier to understand. All in all, he was much impoved today, and I hope he will continue to improve. Please keep Billy in your prayers.

All_ScrappersA newspaper article on George Johnson, husband of Shirley Cole Johnson, class of 56Posted by TerryWilliamson51 at 11:43, on Wednesday, January 4, 2012
George Johnson, beloved husband of Shirley Cole Johnson, South Side Class of 1956 died. The following is an article that was in the Commercial Appeal Newspaper on Wednesday, January 4, 2012.
YOUTH SPORTS PROGRAM IS JOHNSON'S LEGACY.
George W. Johnson had already achieved success as a volunteer youth baseball coach when he got a request that would raise the bar on his happenings in and around the dugout. "Some parents came to him and asked him if he would start an American Legion program in Southaven and DeSoto County", said Johnson's wife, Shirley, "because we didn't have one." From that moment in 1980, Mr. Johnson, an Olive Branch resident who had three sons, would be touching the lives of so many more, including the team that won the state tournament in 1984. "That was his life.. coaching Kids" Shirley siad. "That was his legacy." The coaching cap was worn for 26 years by Mr. Johnson, who died Sunday of complications from pneumonia. He was 73. Mr Johnson spent 44 years working for the railroad, including 36 years as an engineer for Burlington Northern, but his first matter of business after graduating from Memphis Tech in 1956 was Army basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C. He would serve in a platoon with K.G. Coker, who ironically graduated from South Side with Shirley Johnson. "He was a longtime Army buddy, and he married a Scrapper," said Coker, referring to South Side's mascot. "George was a greaat guy and we're going to miss him." Married for more than 53 years, Shirley says she never missed a baseball or football game her husband was coaching. "I went to every one of them," she said. He helped over 60 boys get college scholarships. He'd write letters for them. He would have coaches come and watch them play," The McAlister American Legion squad finished second place at state in 1989 and captured third in '83, '86 and '88. The 1984 club earned a trip to the regional tournament in DeLand, Fla. Several of his players inked scholarships close to home, like Chris Tice (Delta State) and Lee Hodge (Ole Miss), while others took advantage of further-away opportunities like Tommy Hanahan who signed with the University of Maine. "We'd keep in touch with them in different places, "Shirley Johnson said. "If you could see my Facebook page--it's just loaded (with condolences)." Visitation is today from 5 to 8 p.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home in Memphis. The service is Thursday at 2 p.m. at Faith Presbyterian Church in Germantown.
